Importance of Oil Changes

The primary goal of an oil and filter change is to ensure the internal engine parts stay lubricated and receive valuable nutrients, which contributes to engine longevity. With an engine that can reach over 200 degrees Fahrenheit, it's essential to make sure the oil is not aged, dirty or contaminated. Two main components make up conventional motor oil, and they include base oils and additives. Generally speaking, base oils account for about 70-90% of the total oil. And they are formed from natural gas and crude oil. The remaining percentages can vary. But it's typically additives that are known as dispersants. Dispersants help to prevent the oil from clumping together and settling in pockets.

As you may have guessed by now, the oil can lose its potency over time. Not only because of the engine heat and potentially weakened oil but also because of the environment and dangerous elements circulating in the air. If the oil is not changed regularly and timely, eventually, the effects will be noticeable in fuel economy, engine performance and possibly even engine damage.

Types of Oil Changes

There are other oils other than conventional oil that you may use and provide benefits to your engine. However, refer to your owners' manual about your particular car. You want to ensure that you adhere to the manufacturers' recommendations and warranty requirements.

Other types of oil changes include the following:

Fully Synthetic Oil: The oil includes artificial chemical compounds created from modified materials, including petroleum. The base material comes from distilled crude oil.

Semi-Synthetic Oil: Also known as a "synthetic blend," it is a mixture of conventional oil and fully synthetic oil. The oil is made using a modified petroleum process and does include a percentage of crude oil, but it's less than conventional oil.

High-Mileage Oil: Primarily used for older engines, it includes additives such as conditioners, antioxidants, detergents and friction-reducing components. Typically, the oil has a high tolerance for viscosity.
